UWS referencing is a version of the Harvard referencing style. It is used to note where previous research has contributed to the findings or inferences in a new academic paper or essay. The Harvard sub-style was created as the standard format for The University of the West of Scotland.
UWS Harvard style is displayed in the parenthetical format. That means there should be a citation in the text and a full reference at the end of the paper, both correlating with each other. This system allows the reader to see the source of the information, data, theory or finding and where it is used within the text.
UWS style citations are presented in the author-date format, where both are shown within brackets in the text. When the authors name already appears in the text then only the year of publication is shown within the brackets, directly after their name appears.
Each citation has a counterpart in the reference list that includes all the information needed to find the book, website or other sources where the information was found. The full list of references is formatted chronologically and presented in the format shown below.
There are different formats for each source type – for example a book should be formatted differently to a website or academic journal in the reference list.
