Parties often seek to resolve their disputes through arbitration because of the potential advantages over the courts. Advantages include:

Unlike in court, parties can select an arbitrator with an appropriate degree of practical experience.
Arbitration is often faster than litigation in court, and a time limit can be placed on the length of the process.
Arbitration can be cheaper and more flexible, more commercial and less formal than court.
Unlike court rulings, arbitration proceedings and arbitral awards are confidential.
Unlike in court, there are very limited avenues for appeal of an arbitral award, which limits the duration of the dispute and any associated liability.
Due to the provisions of the New York Convention 1958, arbitral awards are generally easier to enforce in other nations than court judgments. (Scottisharbitrationcentre.org, 2015)

""Politico reports that five years after the Common Core educational curriculum went into effect, higher education has not adapted its standards and practices to be conducive to allowing a smooth transition from high school to college mainly because there is no one-size-fits all definition for ""college ready.""

Excuse me, but *B AND S*!!

This is an excuse to justify students who do not want to do the work and expect a high grade regardless of what they accomplish. Common Core has nothing to do with this. LAZY and feeling entitled does.

I went back to school in my thirties and was astounded by what students get by with. Not only every excuse in the book for missing class, but lack of any type of writing skills. The worst part was that these people receive the same grades as though who have the skills and give their best effort. A professor once told me that it seems his role has changed from professor to customer service rep. This is a country going downhill very quickly.

I stopped adjunct teaching after catching two students in two different marketing classes (one an MBA class) blatantly plagiarizing off the internet, and then watching the university administration refuse to back me giving them a zero for the assignment. (I could have failed them for the course, had I chosen to do so.) My students in general were woefully unprepared and could have cared less about learning. For one assignment, they couldn't solve a problem that involved multiplying two simple numbers! Just pass me and let me move on was the sense I got. What ... a ... joke.

I caught a student cheating with a cheat-sheet under her test. I had all of the evidence, filed charges, but nothing was done. She got a pass.
Also, students cannot do simple mental math. They (as well as adults) rely on calculators. I am a baby-boomer who learned math without ever using a calculator. I can do mental math faster than students using calculators.

Business students...!
While I was in school I remember hearing a group of Business students yelling and stomping after they came back from a class. They had failed an important exam... but they were mad at the professor. They felt it wasn't their fault that they'd stayed up partying all night before the test - they said he should have postponed the test for them. One even said ""I paid for that class so I deserve a passing grade!""

The worst part of it (to me) was, these were people who were training to become business leaders. Maybe they hadn't had an Ethics class yet...

This particular teacher may be a little extreme, but I understand the issue. Years ago, I had a student teacher that hadn't mastered the material and processes trying to teach my students. He couldn't have passed a high school course with what he was attempting to do; I failed him for student teaching because he failed to meet the standards for what he was supposed to teach, yet he signed a contract to teach before his time with me was concluded. The administrator that hired him couldn't be bothered with an evaluation of how he performed in his student teaching experience. The reaction from my colleagues? They felt that the University should have the responsibility of having kept out of teaching. That line of thought is exactly why we have people graduating from high school who aren't literate, can't do simple math, nor complete a complete paragraph.

Part of the problem is that every college and university is chasing the almighty dollar. When students are seen as ""consumers"" they have the attitude of consumers -- which means the ""customer"" is always right and must be catered to. The attitude is definitely ""I'm not paying 30 grand to get a C"" -- and this is just as much of a problem at wealthy, exclusive schools as it is at state schools. The attitude of entitlement comes from both students and their parents, neither of whom understand that you're paying for the opportunity to learn, not for the piece of paper. College is marketed as a fun time, and that's what both students and their parents expect -- not the pain of failing or the struggle of working hard.

Bravo to this professor. No doubt he has tenure, as adjuncts whose employment depends on student evaluations would never dare to do this, since students give the best evaluations to the professors who give them what they want (an easy A). Shame on the parents, who didn't teach their children that swearing at other people is obnoxious whether the person you're swearing at is above you in rank or not, and if they are in power over you there will be consequences you won't like. (Yahoo News, 2015)
