Cardiff University Harvard style is a variation of the well-known Harvard style of referencing sources. Harvard referencing, Cardiff style is used specifically for students and academics writing for Cardiff University publications.
This referencing format is designed to help researchers to accurately acknowledge the sources they use to gather information.
The Cardiff University Harvard referencing style is a parenthetical referencing style, which means that it has in-text citations and a corresponding, alphabetised reference list at the end of the paper. This allows the reader to quickly see the source without having to consult the full reference list whilst reading.
In-text citations in the Cardiff University Harvard style are shown using the author’s surname and year of publication. If the author’s name is already included in the text then only the year needs to be shown within the brackets. If the name doesn’t appear in the text then it is also shown in the brackets before the date.
The reference list is given at the end of the paper in alphabetical order. It includes a full list of the source details. There are different formats for each source type – for example a book should be referenced differently to an academic journal or website.
