How do I format an in-text citation for a DVD, video, or film in APA style?

When you want to create an in-text citation for a DVD, video, or film, use the director’s last name along with the year the film was released in parentheses. The templates and examples below show how to create an in-text citation for a video or film in APA style.

Templates:

Parenthetical: (Director’s Last Name, year)

Narrative: Director’s Last Name (Year)

Examples:

Parenthetical: (Goldsmith, 2012)

Narrative: Goldsmith… (2012).

The same format applies for YouTube videos as well. In those instances, use the uploader’s last name in lieu of the director’s. If the individual contributor is missing, use the corporate source’s name instead.

Examples:

Parenthetical: (Tedx, 2022)

Narrative: Tedx… (2022).

How do I format a reference list entry for a DVD, video, or film in APA style?

A reference list entry for a DVD, video, or film should contain the director’s name(s), their role (in parentheses), the date of publication, the title, the medium within square brackets (and if applicable, the format details), the production company, and if applicable, a URL.

Only include the format details when it’s important to specify the version of the medium you’re citing (for example, if citing commentary only available on the special edition). Don’t include the format to specify how you watched the film.
