How do I format an in-text citation for a report in APA style?

There are many types of reports: research reports, government reports, and technical reports are a few examples. However, they are all treated the same way in in-text citations. The in-text citation for a report in APA is similar to those of a journal or a magazine article. The type of publication (book, journal, newspaper, etc.) is not an essential element in the APA in-text citation. APA includes the author’s last name(s) (or the organization’s name) and the year of publication for in-text citations.

Therefore, to cite a report in APA style, write the report’s individual author’s last name(s), or the organization’s name, and the year it was published.

Examples of a narrative and parenthetical in-text citation for a report by a single individual author and a single organization author are below:

Template

Narrative: Author’s Surname/Organization’s Name (Year)

Parenthetical: (Author’s Surname/Organization’s Name, Year)

Example

Narrative: United Nations Environment Programme (2020)… or Alvaredo (2018)…

Parenthetical: (United Nations Environment Programme, 2020) or (Alvaredo, 2018)

How do I format a reference list entry for a report in APA style?

Formatting a reference list entry for a report in APA style (be it a research, technical, or government report) is similar to formatting the entry for a book. The citation for a report should include the name of the author or the organization who produced the report, the title of the report, publisher, year of publication, and the URL.

See below for a template and example for how to create a reference list entry for a report in APA style.

Template

Author’s Last Name, First Initial/Organization Name. (Year). Title of the report. Publisher Name (if different from author name). URL

Example

American Petroleum Institute. (2009). Addressing uncertainty in oil and natural gas industry greenhouse gas inventories: Technical considerations and calculation methods. http://www.api.org/~/media/Files/EHS/climate-change/Addressing_Uncertainty.pdf

Notes

  • Do not use an end period after the URL.
  • If the publisher is the same as the author (as seen in the above example), exclude the publisher name from the source.
