How do I format an in-text citation for a magazine in MLA style?

MLA uses the author’s or authors’ names (in the case of two authors) in in-text citations. If there is no author, the citation includes the title. Unlike other reference styles, the year of publication is not included in the text in MLA style. However, the specific page number or numbers from which information has been taken are included if the work is on more than one page. There are two types of in-text citations in MLA style: citation in prose and parenthetical citation.

The in-text citation style is the same for any type of publication (journal, book, or magazine). Below shows both types of in-text citations in MLA style for a single author with a one-page article in a magazine.

Citation in prose

Include the full name of the author at the first mention of the work in the text. Use only the surname in subsequent occurrences. Do not use middle initials in citations. If the work is on more than one page, provide the page number or numbers at the end of a reference to something specific in the author’s work.

Example

First occurrence: William Fox, while walking on the labyrinthine street, found the treasure.

Subsequent occurrences: Fox estimated the value of the treasure.

Parenthetical citation

Include only the surname of the author in all occurrences.

Example

The jewels in the chest are precious and belong to the second century (Fox).

How do I format a works cited entry for a magazine in MLA style?

Formatting a works-cited entry for a magazine article in MLA style is similar to formatting a journal article except that, unlike a journal article, month and/or date is also included for a magazine article along with the year.

Below is an example of a magazine article in MLA style.

Format

Author’s Surname, First Name. “Title of the Magazine Article.” Name of the Magazine, Day Month Year, URL

Example

Roth, Annie. “When Photographers Get Too Close, Wildlife Pays the Price.” Hakai Magazine, 14 Apr. 2020. www.hakaimagazine.com/features/when-photographers-get-too-close-wildlife-pays-the-price.

Notes

  • The magazine name is given in italics.
  • Abbreviate the month in the date field (except May, June, and July).
  • If URL is given, include it after the newspaper name.
  • Do not add “https:” before the URL.
